Boy Scout Astronomy Badge Program
Coca-Cola Space Science Center

Attention all scouts! Come down to the Coca-Cola Space Science Center for a day of exploration and discovery! During the day’s activities, scouts will learn about stars, constellations, the Moon, and planets through interactive classroom sessions, center exhibits, and our Omnisphere Theater. This experience is aligned with the Boy Scout Astronomy Badge, so participating scouts will qualify for their badges at the end of the program!

Part 1: All about Telescopes and Astronomy Careers! (Meets: 1, 3a, 3b, 3c, 10) In the first part, scouts will learn about the different types of telescopes, how to safely observe with telescopes, and how astronomers use telescopes to find out information about our universe. We will also discuss the many different careers in astronomy.

Part 2: The Sky and the Planets (Meets: 2, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 5a, 5b) For the second part, we move to the Omnisphere Theater, a world-class digital planetarium, to learn about the stars, constellations, and planets. During this time, we will sketch out the position of constellations at various parts of the year to understand the movement of the stars throughout Earth’s 365-day revolution around the sun.

Part 3: The Moon and the Sun (Meets 7a, 7c, 7d, 8a, 8b) The third part is spent discussing the Moon and the Sun and their effect on Earth’s weather. We will also discuss eclipses and phases of the Moon, and illustrate these concepts through a number of interactive activities.

Part 4: The Movement of the Sky and Planets (Meets 6, 7b, 5a, 5b if needed) For the fourth part we return to the Omnisphere Theater to explore the sky in motion and to discuss how the planets move over the course of time in the sky. Included in this hour is a detailed discussion and demonstration of the lunar phases.

Part 5: Wrap Up and Tour of the Mead Observatory (Meets 9a) Finally, we wrap up with a discussion of topics covered and conclude with a tour of the Mead Observatory.
