25 Years of CCSSC

The Coca-Cola Space Science Center (CCSSC) in Columbus, Georgia is a division of Columbus State University (CSU) serving as an academic enrichment center for the university and a regional tourist destination for the public. Established in 1996 as a partnership between CSU, Uptown Columbus, the Muscogee County School District, and other community partners, the CCSSC is Georgia’s only science center and museum facility uniquely dedicated to providing experiences for students and public visitors in astronomy and space science. The CCSSC serves more than 35,000 patrons and students annually with on-site activities for groups from as far as Florida to Tennessee. The Center also serves many more people through mobile programs and online outreach. The CCSSC has four major components to the facility; the Omnisphere Theater planetarium, the Challenger Learning Center, the WestRock Observatory, and the exhibit gallery featuring over $20 million in NASA artifacts from the Apollo and Space Shuttle eras.

In the past 25 years of operation, Coca-Cola Space Science Center programs and initiatives have served more than 950,000 people! More than 75,000 students have flown virtual space missions at the CCSSC’s Challenger Learning Center. The CCSSC has collaborated with the Muscogee County School District to serve local students throughout all 25 years. However today, this collaboration has grown. CCSSC now offers annual programming for every MCSD student from Kindergarten through 6th Grade – over 17,000 students per year. At the college level, CCSSC engages in workforce development equipping its student interns with 21st-Century job skills. Over 80 students who have had internship experiences at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center have chosen to pursue careers in fields, such as aerospace and propulsion engineering, astrophysics, planetary science, computer science, environmental science, and science & math education.

We cannot wait to see you as we celebrate 25 years of CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center!
