Due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID19, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center is cancelling the Summer Exploration Academy this year (2020). If we are able to safely open in July, we are planning on offering some awesome day-long programs. In the meantime, our staff is working hard to continue bringing the community engaging science experiences during this time. Blast off on our blog for some activities, articles, and videos that you can enjoy from anywhere: Meteor Moments! We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy during this time. We are looking forward to having everyone back in our center soon.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns at outreach@ccssc.org.

Thank you,
Sarah Nupen, External Programs Coordinator

Ever wanted to be a space explorer?

Our fun, exciting Exploration Academy will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to investigate our Solar System and beyond! CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center has developed a multi-year, progressive learning experience where students (8-18 years of age) explore space science, engineering, rocketry, robotics, 3D design, 3D printing, drones, and more. Experts are on-hand to guide campers and encourage their creativity as they participate in engaging STEAM-based challenges.

The adventure begins with our elementary camp, as students take one small step into the world of space exploration, learning to engineer robots through active play and problem solving. They will progress to creating and programing robots for increasingly difficult challenges, and on to flying drones with FAA-Certified drone pilots. They will finish the Academy with a two-week capstone course engaging all these skills to explore the Martian terrain.

Students are welcome to join in with their age-appropriate camp and begin at any stage. However, we recommend students attend as many stages as possible to get the full experience. Participation in our Exploration Academy prepares students to think creatively to solve real-world problems and encourages them to be curious, lifelong learners ready for the 21st-Century workforce.

One Small Step: Elementary Engineering

Students who attend this camp will take one small step into the realm of space science! Campers will design robots and create programs to traverse unknown terrain as they explore hands-on how engineering and robotics can solve real-world problems.

Space Robotics

Whether they are doing planetary flybys, landing on comets, or exploring the Martian terrain, robots have become essential to space exploration. This camp provides campers an intensive, authentic robotic experience by exploring and building robots using robotic controllers, sensors, actuators, radio communications, and power supplies. Campers will also get to experience how engineers design hardware for space using 3D programs and printers.

Drones and Aerial Exploration

Under the supervision of FAA certified drone instructors, students will learn how to design, build, and operate a quad copter using 3D designing software, 3D printers, soldering irons, and more! This advanced course is designed to give our Summer Academy students more challenging engineering experiences and expose them to the proper techniques for safely flying drones. Campers will be able to take aerial shots they can share with family and friends as they explore the wonders of drone flight!

One Giant Leap Into Your Future: Applications of Space Robotics

This selective two-week camp developed in partnership with NASA leads students through a simulated Mars Rover mission. As NASA prepares to launch its Mars 2020 rover and drone, students will also design, build, and program robots and fly drones across a variety of terrains to accomplish their mission of exploring the surface of the Red Planet. This camp is offered at no cost to the student but seats are competitive based on student’s applications. Online applications for this camp open February 18th and close April 20th at www.ccssc.org. Lunch for this camp will be provided but transportation is not. Underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply.
